Ok, full disclosure, I’m a bit biased as I did my OCN Level 6 Holistic Sleep Coaching qualification under Lyndsey Hookway’s excellent tutelage. But, seriously, if you’re looking for a reassuring, sensible, non-judgemental, evidence based book on how to support your family’s sleep, this is a great place to start.

Hookway ticks off all the big topics working her way through sleep myths (spoiler: giving your baby a bottle is not a magical panacea for night time sleep), discusses how to improve parental/caregiver’s sleep and mental health, and clearly explains the science of normal infant sleep to ensure realistic expectations. She then moves through naps and night feeds, a discussion on crying, gentle sleep optimisation, and how to manage a genuine sleep crisis to ensure the best outcome for everyone involved.

She's included useful guidance on total sleep averages in children from 0-24 months, when to drop naps and signs to look out for that your little one's sleep needs have changed, and simple, practical tips on how to make changes effectively.

There’s a full 26 pages of references so you know she’s done her homework and can also check out the literature yourself if you’re so inclined, and it’s nicely indexed (not always the case) so when you want to dip in and out and just read up on a particular issue it’s easy to find what you need quickly.

The chapters are all broken down into palatable chunks so you don’t get overwhelmed and the advice is sage, easy to implement and considered.

I recommend this book a lot and it’s a great present for any new parent.
